“Disappointment to a noble soul is what cold water is to burning metal; it strengthens, tempers, intensifies, but never destroys it.” - Eliza Tabor
“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”- MLK...
THE VENT
Over the last 18 to 24 months I have been walking around in a daze, a fog, that eventually lead to an abyss of disappointment. It hurts my soul to its core to see how people treat people and treat each other these days. It is disappointing to see how an individuals word no longer has any more meaning than the bird poop I see on the windshield of my car. Much like the bird poop on my car windshield, these words and actions are hard to wash out of ones life.
When I was growing up people said things like "please" and "Thank You". When someone asked a simple question like "How are you?" they waited for an answer. Today people barely make eye contact when they are speaking with you, they are distracted by the phones, iPads, and simply rude. Most people I interact with today are so caught up talking about themselves that I wonder why they even bother to have me in the room. As I raise my children in today's world I am so worried about what they will encounter when they are my age.
Now lets talk about how people act in the world of business... Over the last 20 years, I have had the wonderful and unique opportunity to work in many industries: retail, education, music, sales, marketing, human resources and now the heath and wellness industry.
No matter the industry I noticed that most workplace behaviors are the same.
Many workplaces have hierarchal structures that foster and encourage mean spirited and soul-less environments and unfortunately this has become the norm.
It is now an anomaly when you find a workplace that fosters and encourages a community based environment that works towards achieving company goals and offers employee enrichment.
Some business owners tend to look at their environments through cold cost cutting eyes. They often forget to ask the human being that spends the majority of their day at their company, "How are you?" and mean it.
THE LESSON
So what has all of this taught me...
“Disappointment to a noble soul is what cold water is to burning metal; it strengthens, tempers, intensifies, but never destroys it.” - Eliza Tabor
Even though I have been exposed to all of this, it has made me stronger. I choose to still believe in people and will simply be cautious of who I trust and allow to influence my life.
I believe that the universe orchestrates occurrences in your life to help you experience personal growth and character development. I also believe that the sky is the limit in my life and these experiences will only provide me with a stronger wind beneath my wings.
